Now that we are, somehow, a third of the way through 2024, I wanted to check in with the goals I set back in January. (And also say thanks to everyone who commented last entry! Your words were read and appreciated, and then I did that thing where I thought 'I appreciate this so much I need to delay responding until I know the Exact Right Words To Say,' and...now it's four months later. Sorry.)

So about 2wks ago I read Gideon the Ninth, all in one sitting, staying up till 4am to finish. Thursday my library request for Harrow the Ninth came through and this morning I finished it, this time at 2 am. i cried. i giggled a little, though not as much as in the first book. I had conflicted feelings. I had PASSIONATE shippy feelings - like holy fuck, I NEED Gideon and Harrow to kiss. i am more than a little in love?

as i read i stuck some thoughts and incoherent shrieking in twitter drafts but I was too absorbed, and my wrists have been too busted recently, to do a detailed liveblog. But here are some things, mostly about book2:

Requesting fanart for these two! I love the atmosphere of the Souls games and how interesting and tragic so many of the NPCs and bosses are, and the Twin Princes were two of my favorite characters from the third game. These two are hilarious and heartwarming. I love how well they work together despite their wildly different personalities, how much they care for each other, and how they make each other better people. For names, I like Shigeko for Mob and have also seen and liked Takako for Reigen, but mostly I just like them to be Mob and Reigen.

These two are my newest ship, and they broke my heart in so many ways. The trust and loyalty between them is so moving, and I'd love to see more of their intense bond and the way their lord-retainer relationship turns into something deeper and more complex.

My favorite emotionally repressed teens with gravity-defying hair! I love them both so much and would love to see them interact. I love how different they are - Mob’s character arc involves making friends and growing closer to the people around him, while Homura’s is about growing more distant and isolated from people. I'd be interested to see if they could find any common ground, or could teach each other something to help them on their personal journey!

I think the humor in these two canons would mesh very well, and I like the idea of Moist and Reigen meeting and immediately being able to tell exactly what a fraud they both are. I can see Reigen disliking Moist for his thievery and Moist disliking Reigen for taking advantage of a kid, though they could probably both come around to liking each other. I can also see Moist realizing immediately that Reigen is a piece of glass trying too hard to pass for a diamond, and that Mob is actual diamond. Attempts to out-con each other would be great! I'd prefer a fusion or three-characters-walked-into-a-bar setup, and I'd like if you handwave/just don't acknowledge the Japanese-Morporkian language barrier. I'd also like it if you didn't acknowledge Raising Steam (or any other Discworld novels after Unseen Academicals).

Fic prompts:

• Reigen vs. Moist in some kind of contest with media spectacle, with Mob dragged along for the ride
• Pulling off a con for the greater good
• A golem gets possessed by an evil spirit, Mob has to exorcise them

I love these two, their similarities, their relationships, and their personality clashes. I'm very interested in how their relationship might change across timelines, and what might happen if they were forced to work together or able to discover common ground. Homura's singleminded devotion to her cause and Sayaka's black-and-white morals and occasional volatility make for a fascinating combo, and I'd love anything focusing on their dynamic! I am okay with downer/ambiguous endings for this pair-up. 

General things I like for them: bodyswap, forced to work together, moments of uneasy semi-friendship, growing closer and further apart across timelines, one of them getting injured and the other caring for her out of practical necessity, unexpected kindness, not-so-different, power struggles, hypothermia and huddling for warmth, getting trapped together somehow, friction/anger/fighting

• A timeline where Mami isn't in the picture for some reason and Homura tries (badly) to play the mentor role to Sayaka to get her to help Homura defeat Walpurgisnacht

Homura is such a fascinating character, and the complicated and emotionally fraught history between these two hits so many of my tragic romance buttons. I love Madoka's selflessness and loving heart, her dedication to hope, and her inner core of strength. Homura's complexity and moral ambiguity is a great complement to that, and I'd love anything that focuses on their complicated emotions, the similarities and differences in their personalities, and how their relationship evolves and devolves over time. Any point in the series, during Rebellion, or post-Rebellion is good for me. Darker/dubconnier takes of AkuHomu/Madoka are okay, as is post-Rebellion redemption.

General things I like for them: loyalty, hanahaki disease, love confessions, angst with a happy or bittersweet ending, moments of happiness together in the sea of misery that is canon, hypothermia and huddling for warmth, sharing food or clothes, alone together at the end of the world, missed opportunities, timeloops-within-timeloops, "if you want to hurt her you'll have to go through me"-type protectiveness, claustrophobic obsession

I love how similar these two are despite their initial antagonism! I love Kyouko's brashness, her buried core of loyalty, hope, and idealism, and her sad backstory. Sayaka's perfectionism, outrage at injustice, and self-hatred is so sad and interesting to me as well. They are a wonderfully tragic pair, but I also love how they're capable of bringing each other happiness in timelines where their relationship isn't so strained. I'm into domestic sweetness during Rebellion, angry rivalry set during the series or during a past timeline, uneasy friendship that turns to falling in love, romantic dying-together scenes, confessions/get-together during the afterlife, and everything in between.

General things I like for them: wearing each other’s soul gem rings, letting themselves be vulnerable around each other, love confessions, Sayaka brushing or washing Kyouko’s hair, Kyouko bringing food to Sayaka, one of them getting injured and the other caring for her, hypothermia and huddling for warmth, clothes-sharing, protectiveness, awkward/painful first kiss, a date or feelings confession on top of a skyscraper or in some other unlikely place on one of their magical girl outings

Mob is an endlessly fascinating character to me; I love his self-doubt and quest for self-improvement, how good and kindhearted he is, how he sees the best in everyone and draws it out of them just by being himself. I love how Reigen is manipulative and can be a jerk but is still a good person, and I love his sometimes-contradictory morals, how he is a good example for Mob, his ego and bravado, his isolation and desire to be special, and all the ways he and Mob impact each other's lives.
